The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock® was created in 1889 at Pawleys Island, one of the oldest summer resorts on the South Carolina coast. Captain Joshua John Ward, a river boat pilot who barged rice and supplies between nearby Georgetown and the great rice plantations of the South Carolina low country, found the grass filled mattresses on his boat too hot in the summer.

The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock® was created in 1889 at Pawleys Island, one of the oldest summer resorts on the South Carolina coast. Captain Joshua John Ward, a river boat pilot who barged rice and supplies between nearby Georgetown and the great rice plantations of the South Carolina low country, found the grass filled mattresses on his boat too hot in the summer.

He decided to make a cool and comfortable cotton rope hammock for use on his boat. After several uncomfortable designs, Cap'n Josh made a hammock using wooden spreaders without knots. This original design has proven to be so comfortable, that it is still used in our popular hammocks, over a century later.

Using the highest quality materials, our hammocks are available in the traditional all-cotton rope or the soft spun polyester rope. Our custom designed stretcher bars are cut from seasoned Carolina red oak, then steamed, bent, drilled, sanded, and varnished -- all to impart a comfortable sway to the hammock and to spread the rope evenly for optimum stability.

Once the hammock body is woven, it is connected to strong plaited ends and then strung through the oak stretcher bars. Nautical bowline knots attach the ends to the body of the hammock. Upon final inspection, each hammock is marked with the traditional metal tag to ensure its authenticity as an Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock®.

The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock® is knitted using the highest quality materials. Our craftsmen create symmetric patterns and lend a touch of art to their unique and interesting craft. Once the hammock body is woven, it is connected to strong plaited ends and then strung through the oak stretcher bars. Nautical bowline knots attach the ends to the body of the hammock. The body of each Poolside Collection hammock combines the durability and strength of vinyl coated polyester or Duracord® yarn with the vivid hues and soft band of solution-dyed acrylic. Each single-layered sling is soft and body hugging while weather resistant and water repellent, perfect for waterfront or homefront. The "Cabin" sprang-woven camping Nicamaka® hammock starts with factory-dyed, high-quality imported polyester, polycotton or cotton yarns that artisans twist into cords, sprang-weave the cords into transverse stretch beds and then perform all of the hammocks configuration adjustment, detail & finish work by hand.

The "Cabin" is without crochet coverlet borders or decor detailing (which could be in the way at sea or in the woods). These camping hammocks are ideal to hang as part of your cabin on the sea or at the lake, or used as supplemental beds or seating in hunting or fishing camps. These hammocks come with cast-nylon support-eye thimbles to resist salt and humidity. Hanging Length is 13 ft.; Bed Length is 96"; Weight is 5 lbs.

The sprang weaving process is all done by hand and is the simplest and most enduring weaving process existing.

The "Single" Personal-size Nicamaka® hammock is our one-person model for youngster's rooms, college dormitories & guest rooms - a kind of " blue jeans" for the house. These hammocks/hamacas have hand-crochet borders that provide a decor style and a convenient "afghan" coverlet to off-set the chill from relaxation. This soft, stretchy bed differs from the coarse open ropes or un-yielding cross-woven mesh fabrics usual in common rope-and-stick hammocks and greatly improves the comfort and stability of this spreader bar Nicamaka®.
